With the growing financial crisis, crime is poised to return to levels only seen in other times of economic trouble. While crime rates nationally have fell greatly over the past decade, the recent growth of crime could potentially return America’s urban communities to levels of crime not seen in years. Because the budget for the court system in Philadelphia has been scaled back over the past few years, a sharp increase in crime rates will make its already bulging dockets worse. Something will have to give in order for the criminal courts in Philadelphia to handle such an increase of criminal cases, but increasing the budget for criminal courts during economically troubling times is probably not a popular proposal. We’ll see.
